Okay, I know first hand how much our kids love homework after a full day of school. To overly simplify your action, "Sell It Better" than you or their teachers have sold it and they are more likely to do it. Assure them that planning their days, weeks, month (with what ever organizational tool that they feel the most comfortable), will give them:

  • More time to spend with their friends and family
  • Easier avenue to divide long assignments so that they are not stuck writing an entire essay the night before it is due. This way, the split can be in 30 to 45 minute sessions and spread out over the month.
  • A way to always remember what the teacher wanted, text page numbers and due dates so that they never have to ask their teacher to give them instructions all over again or call friends who may not even know.
  • A way to better grades, organization skills required by the time they get to high school and a better feeling about themselves.

This article is a quick, fun, easy way for students to learn how to plan their homework schedules, (and friends and family time too), and make their school / educational lives  better too!  I have also included a free homework planner page, below, as my gift to you for your visit. Your student can use this homework planner sheet to use every week, over and over, and become a more successful student.

Please note that If necessary, it is fine and okay and maybe a good thing to introduce these tips on homework, the planner and test taking skills one or two at a time. You know your child and what he or she can handle at one sitting, and there is no huge rush if time is needed to complete learning about these tools,

By the time that you reach high school, school becomes a "sink or swim" situation in regard to keeping up with all your work assignments. It is essential to know that by the time you enter your first year of high school, teachers will expect that you have already learned excellent organizational skills and practice them on your own. Early planning skills training and mastering those skills will help you with your high school caree

The more you plan and organize, the more time you will have to be with your friends and family. The more you plan, the more time you will have free. The more you plan, the more you get done and that will increase your school success.

It is very stressful for students of all age and grade levels to get stressed out over school.  Forgetting homework assignments, page numbers, due dates, and working that into your social life and family time can be overwhelming. For just one essay assignment, you will have research time to spend, outlines to make, rough drafts, editing time, final drafts and if needed, images or graphs too. And that is just one class assignment from one teacher who may also have daily homework for you. All this stress and that of your social life, family time, sports and clubs, can become too much and your work suffers. So, here is help to lower your stress and allow you to learn more, worry less and have more free time than you may have now.

Every Homework Assignment Needs to Be Put in Your Planner (and later Calendar) When Assigned.

Download this free student monthly planner, my gift for your visit. Just click on it.

  •    Put your homework assignments, dates, details, pages numbers etc., on your homework planner immediately as the teacher announces it. When home, you can transfer your information straight from planner to calendar. This must become habit and done every single time you get an assignment so that you do not lose, forget, pile too much work for one day or weekend and all your work gets turned in, on time, not rushed and done well.

  • Always plan your homework!  This will save you  from a lot of stress at homework time each day.   First, save room in your homework planner and save time, by using abbreviations.  You probably do this online or in text messages anyway, right? Pg for “page”, # for “number”, ppl for “people and so on. Your planner will take up less space, you will write better because you are writing faster and more clearly and you'll be able to read it later! I couldn't read my own notes in school, don't let me be you!
  • Schedule your homework dates for assignments and assignment parts, by determining the homework days your assignment will take in total, and then dividing your assignment into the available days. Here, let me show you:

Assignment is an essay on world religions. The teacher wants ten paragraphs, double-spaced, solid facts and resources for supporting sentences and a few images or graphs. You got the assignment on November 1 and it's due November 15th. You have 14 days to complete the essay. Don't write it on the 13th, for example, or it will not be an A+ paper; not even close.

Split the paper up by the open days that you have on your calendar. If you have 5 free days to devote 50 minutes each day to your essay, enter each of them in your planner/calendar for homework.  Next, keep your dates and times as if they were promises that you made. This is how you would complete a well-written essay:

Day 1, November 3rd, 50 minutes: Write an outline of my essay and research facts as needed to support your outline. Place a few keywords and the location of your resources in your outline. Done.

Day 2, November 5th, 50 minutes:  Go over each paragraph's header and fill in the opening statement sentences and a fact you research for each opening statement/paragraph. Done.

3rd day you choose - your rough draft, 4th day, editing and editing again. 5th day, final draft making sure all requirements are met. (November 9th, November 11th and November 12th for example)... DONE! Put your finished project in your notebook and it is ready to turn in on time, fully completed, and the 15th of November came easy with little stress.

Do your homework planning and assignments that same way. Due Friday and received Monday? Split it in two, for example, and do half on Tuesday and half on Thursday, or whenever your daily homework time has openings for assignment work.

YOU NEED TO PLAN FOR FUN TOO!

There's nothing worse that knowing you have at least 45 solid minutes of homework waiting for your to finish while you are kicking back with friends and trying to have fun. It's not fun when you have that dreaded work to do and you're not doing it. Maybe it won't get turned in, and, either way, you're not that happy.

Do your homework first, and then you won’t have to worry about the unfinished homework waiting for you. A balanced student should pencil in time for work, play and family. Always Always do your homework first, and at the same time each day, no fail and feel better. However, it is also very important to have real fun each day too. Don’t forget that you should PLAN for FUN and put that fun on your planner or calendar too. It is important to have a balanced life to avoid stress and even health issues. Be happier, do homework first, play later, and have time for it all.

“All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy”, right?

Get More Motivated by Planning Goals!

Have short-term goals such as finishing your English essay by Friday afternoon so your weekend is free or making mom a birthday card by Saturday latest so she can have it on her Sunday birthday.

Make more long-term goals for a month, quarter, semester, and/or year. Make sure you have goals that meet your interests, hobbies, and fun stuff like saving money for a big birthday party and academic goals. They can be as simple as getting one grade better on your next report card or getting math tutor help so you understand a certain concept. Reward yourself with each goal you reach too!

Your parents can help you set reasonable reachable goals - ask!

TEST-TAKING TIPS AND TRICKS TO KNOW!

Get rest the night before and don’t study too hard that night either. Maybe just read your notes or outline of notes to keep your brain freshened up.  You should have gone over your notes, research, questions and answers etc., the whole week you had to study. It should have been on your homework planner to read and answer questions each homework slot you have available and short 5 minutes slots you have left from your 50 minutes a day allotment. Relaxing the night before will make you calmer and level-headed.

TIPS FOR TRUE/FALSE TEST QUESTIONS:

First, look out carefully for words such as “all” “always” and “never” in your True or False test. Chances are that the answer containing these words will be FALSE. Mark it false. There are exceptions to every rule in life and so those T/F options with those words that leave out all exceptions and possibilities, are untrue. False.

Read the T/F statement slowly and carefully. If just a small bit of the statement is false, the entire sentence is false as well. Even if most of the sentence is true, that bit of false in the line, makes the entire statement false. Pick False

MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST QUESTIONS

Best tip is that you do NOT read the answer options first.  Here's what you do...      Read the questions without peeking at any of the answers.   Next, see if you remember the answer, part of the answer or all of it FIRST.  Use what you can remember from studying. Lastly, when you have that in your head, look at the multiple choice answers,  Choose the answer that comes the closest to your answer and it is probably right.

Unsure of an answer or stuck between two answers?  First, quickly cross out the answers you KNOW are wrong. Some teachers put funny answers once and a while or impossibilities in there, so cross those out.  When you are done, you may have made the choice a 50/50 shot. If you still do not know which of the two left are correct, go with your first inner or gut feeling and do not change your answer unless you are 100% sure you are correct. Move on. Sticking with one problem, stressing over it etc., will take time away from answering all the questions, which is never good.

Strangely, many answers are one to three questions later. The question will literally confirm the answer to a question you pondered a few questions up. Look for those.

If you get stuck and stressed on one problem or question, pick one and check it. Put a tiny star next to it and perhaps if you have further hints later or have a strong hunch, come back to it and choose your response. NEVER leave a multiple-question question unanswered. If there are four answers, you have a 25% chance of getting it right. If you leave it blank because you do not know, you will have zero chance of getting it right by leaving it blank.

In Under 2 Hours a Week, Your Child Can Have a Half Year MORE of Education!

Your child has the opportunity to learn a full extra semester of education MORE in this calendar year!

I read about this study several years ago and then again about six months ago, (another study, same subject). The studies found that if your child has 30 to 40 minutes of homework, (which doesn't mean "work"), a day for the five school days in each week of the school year, they will have learned an added semester of education that year. That's 1 1/2 years of learning in one school year (of 10 months). If they are behind, which most kids are today, sadly, this is another great way to catch up to grade level and even surpass where they should be.

On each of my blog pages/articles, I have full free samples of kid's educational pages. This one is a blank planner to be used in a multiple of school, sports or family topics - whatever your child needs and likes to use the most, (I have a huge set at my Etsy store, see bottom of page). Anyway, this cute Kawaii planner is free, just click on it. My gift to say thank you for your visit.

Q: What if my child's teachers do not give homework?

A: Some teachers feel like a day at school is enough and play should be the remainder of their days, (but parents have that call), or they are just not wanting to correct six classes of 30 students homework papers on top of their busy day, but many just do not do the homework drill and stand by it. There is nothing here to fight, it's just the cards your child was dealt. But YOU can give your child homework for 30 minutes a day! You are a great teacher, your child's favorite teacher, and you care about your child like no one else. You're perfect for the job.

30 Minutes of time is not really a lot of time. You can run to the super market and have your child reach for items by reading your shopping list and then the packaging. That's reading, math,k and it is motivating to help mom, (not work).

I used to wait in doctor's offices with my daughter, open a magazine and find a picture (later words) and close it. Then I would have hear search the magazine for items I said allowed and her excitement was over the top when she would find them. That's memory, reading, hunting, reasoning, paying attention, study skills, and more depending on the search and magazine. It was fun and bonding and (shh, homework).

Soccer practice for Saturday's game is homework, social skills lost, exercise, coordination, math/angles, strategy, great skills in those tricky soccer moves and that list goes on. That's homework, but don;;t tell your child.

Sorting items for you, helping you measure and cook, doing a fun worksheet with a theme she adores or he has a hobby, miniature golf and keeping score, walking exactly a mile, and millions of things are homework. Just be sure to mix it well. Have science experiments, kids love those. Following measurements and recipes for various slime balls and making scented candles and soup for dad, all homework.

30 Minutes to 40 for older kids, is time that will fly by and you will both benefit form the learning and bonding too.

Make a planner, (I sell fun kids blank planners for kids at Etsy). Make Monday a math homework day, Tuesday a "new tool of the week day", Wednesday a worksheet page, Thursday a new word of the week day, Friday a reading day or logic or reasoning day. Mix them up for a well rounded extra semester of education and your child will begin to soar.

Avoid video games, play o8utside is good for them, TV shows are not sitters or homework, (with some exceptions)... 30 to 40bminutes of education for five days a week... 1 1.2 tears in b10b months.

Do you have something that you would like to add to fun homework time and share with other parents? Go ahead, let us all know. More kids can benefit with the added voices of great parents like you!

If your child does get homework daily, I have a wonderful and large list of the best tips from my experiences and from other teachers and parents for homework success (with less stress) I have begun to upload articles on making homework less stressful and even fun... check them out here on my blog and don't forget the free downloads on each page.

Parents: Say It Differently and Your Child Will Get Better Grades!

Build Your Child's Vocabulary and
They Will Succeed in All Subjects! How?

Speak to Your Child Differently!

Dear parent, I present to you an insightful notion that I have been studying my entire life. It is one that delves into the fascinating topic of raising your child's academic potential by altering the way you communicate with them. By adopting a new approach to communication, you can provide your child with a significant advantage in their education and future endeavors.

It is not uncommon for parents to use certain phrases or words without realizing the impact it may have on their child's linguistic development. For example, phrases such as "good job," "good luck," or "you did good" may seem harmless, but they can lead to your child associating the word "good" with positivity, which can be limiting.

As a result, your child may begin to use "good" as a catch-all term for any positive experience, such as "I had a good day" or "dinner was good." This may not seem like a big deal, but it can have a significant impact on their academic and professional life. For instance, is an A+ on a challenging exam "good" in the same way that their soccer practice was "good" or dinner was "good"?

To combat this, it is recommended that you practice using a variety of words to express praise and positivity with your child. By doing this, you can broaden their vocabulary and help them understand that different words have different meanings and connotations.

To help you get started on this journey, I have provided some substitutes for the word "good" that you can use:

- Exceptional
- Outstanding
- Remarkable
- Splendid
- Superb
- Magnificent
- Terrific
- Excellent

Examples:

"A+! What an excellent job!"

"You played first base terrific today"

"You did wonderful on your school paper!"

"You did an exceptional job in your play tonight."

"You set a valuable example for your team today at the game."

"He is an honest person." "She is an exceptional singer."

"What a clever child." "What an enjoyable party they had."

"You look fantastic in your new dress." "Today was fun."

By incorporating these words into your daily communication, you can help your child develop a more extensive vocabulary, improve their academic performance, and prepare them for a successful future.

Children tend to use the words they are familiar with and may struggle to find substitutes for their "go-to" words. As a result, it is essential to encourage a broader range of vocabulary as early as possible to help them become more proficient in written and spoken communication. However, it is never too late to begin!

In addition to these, there are numerous other words that can be used to replace common words that students tend to overuse. For instance, instead of "said," they could use words such as "exclaimed," "stated," "uttered," "whispered," "muttered," and "articulated."

By incorporating these words into their writing and speech, children can significantly enhance their communication skills and become more proficient in expressing their thoughts and ideas. Let's look at "said"

"He mentioned that he enjoyed the ice cream."
"Sally added that the whipped cream was the best part."
"Tom announced that he thought it was time for cake."
"I answered, "me too". "She barked crazy words"
"Max responded that he had allergies to milk products too."

"Cool" (sometimes "Chill") with some of these...
"It is sure chilly tonight." "It is frigid outside!"
"Sam was very reserved at the meeting." "Calm Down!"
"That's a neat trick."  "Your new bike is awesome!"
There's an exciting new movie that came out..."

I hear this word a lot too; "Stupid" - middle school students love to use this word. Try a few of these...
"Well, that was dumb."  "He is acting foolish."
"What a ludicrous thing to say." "That was just laughable."
"That wasn't very smart"  "That's ridiculous"

I cannot empathize enough the significance of vocabulary in reading comprehension and academic success. It is a fundamental educational component that cannot be overstated.

Why it is so all so very important:

It is disheartening to know that many students struggle with vocabulary and language skills, which can lead to difficulty in understanding and comprehending the content of their textbooks and other reading materials. This can result in students falling behind their peers, which is a distressing trend that has been exacerbated by the pandemic.

However, it is never too late to take action and help your child develop their language and vocabulary skills. In addition to using replacement words at home, there are a few more tricks.Try incorporating new words into their daily conversations, children can become more comfortable with using them and expanding their vocabulary.

Furthermore, signing your child up for a "word of the day" program is an excellent way to encourage them to learn new words and incorporate them into their daily language. There are numerous websites and resources available that provide fun and interactive ways for children to learn new words and expand their vocabulary. Merriam-Webster Kids Vocabulary Words of the Day, Vocabulary.com, and Dictionary.com are just a few examples of excellent resources that can help children improve their vocabulary and language skills.

In conclusion, an expansive vocabulary is an essential tool for academic success and professional growth. As parents and educators, we must take an active role in encouraging and fostering language skills in our children. With consistent practice and exposure to new words, children can develop their vocabulary and become proficient in written and spoken communication, which will benefit them throughout their academic and professional lives.

The Experiences Smarter Kids Have

Tip 1: Experience Living, Playing and Learning

There is no secret in this, my humble opinion, about kids and learning. I have had years of experience in teaching ESL, General Population, ED, ADHD, Autistic, Gifted, and Slower Learners and I know there are a LOT of ways to teach children, but in my experience, “experience” is the best teacher. The more experiences a child has from birth on, the more they will learn and relate what they have learned to what they are currently learning; and that’s golden.

I know you have heard that a child can learn more by doing than hearing sometimes. If you tell your 3-year-old that the pot on the stove is hot, well, they may not listen. However, if they grab the handle and feel the heat, they’ll know from then on what your words meant. Let’s hope they do not learn that one the hard way.

Writers write to their audience. If a writer is targeting a very young child,  they will not write a story for them to read about how to best be first base player in a baseball game. The very young child doesn’t really know a ball from a hole in the wall until he or she experiences a ball. The writer will introduce a ball. Likely a colorful eye-catching ball and have the words “BALL: '' under the photo. This is because the young child does not know the basics and has not experienced them and the writer knows that, of course.

However, a sixth grade child has many more years of experience and probably knows a ball, the game of baseball, and position too. The author who is targeting them will expect to tell them how to pitch a ball better, but they won’t start with a picture of a ball and the word under it. A writer writing for major league baseball coaches won’t go over the different positions and such when writing to that target audience. It is the same with all subjects too, not just reading. Authors and school text books of all kinds from science to math, literature to social studies will write to the grade level they are teaching to.

But what if your child is lacking in experiences throughout their childhood? Maybe a parent who is tired from work prefers that their child sit in front of the television and play video games until addicted and they become their only source of experiences? We’ve heard children who are born and do not get the attention, touch, feel, can become stunted severely. There are plenty of horror stories, but that’s not what this is about. Experiences such as squishing their tiny toes in a thick mud puddle, helping mom pick out food from the grocery store, going to the dentist and having a cavity filled, trying to run on the sand and realizing it is much harder than running on the grass and even trying new foods and helping to mix ingredients in bowls. These are of great value. If your child lacks real enriching experiences, they will fall behind in school.

If they can connect later in their life the reasons that it is much harder to run on sand than on grass and their personal experiences with both, they can use their experience with the sand and grass runs to connect to a science lesson and understand it rather than gloss over it and become uninterested. It sounds simple and it really is. To help your child in a fun and enduring way, live life with them and try it all! You don’t need to travel the world to go to an Indian restaurant and try the food, smell the dining room, learn the names of a spice or two and then decide how they feel about it. It cost nothing to help dad rake the leaves and learn that this chore is seasonal. Dad could even mention that every fall they rake lots of leaves. Later, when learning the seasons in preschool or kindergarten, they gave reference, opinions, critical thinking skills and can connect time with dad to seasons. He/she will “get it”.

Science, writing and vocabulary and history are literally all around us. Take the time to enrich your child daily in something they have never done, tried, eaten, or even words they’ve not associated with anything in particular yet. They will read better, math will be easier as will science and heck, all the subjects. Their learning skills like logic and reasoning will become stronger with every passing experience that is new and different. Promise!

Let me know what you think! Until next time, fondly, Linki

"It's All About the Kids! Help Your Child Catch Up and Suceed In Education and Life

Why this blog?

>>> It's all about the lost education and socialization our kids lost during the pandemic years... and how your child can catch up and even excel.

I am an educator by day and I sell family and kid's printable fun "stuff" at my Etsy Shop by night. Making these printable goodies have been a fun hobby up until now.

I have heard many news reports state that most of America's children of school age, are years behind where they should be. I have seen our own district numbers recently and it is all true. Reading, Writing, Spelling, Math, Science in America are so low, that near 3rd world countries are doing better. Wow! As an educator who really cares, I had to start this, my first blog ever.

Their Future, Is Now!

I work in special education for the most part, so I have a lot of experience in helping students to catch up to their grade level. I felt the need to share many of my tips and seasoned information with parents so that they, you, can help your child catch up. Maybe, if all goes super well, your child can catch up and then, surpass his or her peers and actually get ahead educationally and socially.

I am ready to go on an adventure with you here. Even though I am at the moment writing to myself and figuring out this blog world, I hope that you and I can reach as many parents as possible to join in and make our nation's children as bright again!  Of course, I would love to see our nation's kids learning, but also having as much fun as they can at the same time. I hope that they will also catch the bug of the "love of learning" and we can do this with some degree of speed.

(By the way, The photos and forms and such that I use here for a breakup of too much text, are clickable and can be saved. When you click one you enjoy, it will appear in real size, most with PNG quality and clear backgrounds. They are mine, they could be yours too in seconds! Printable stickers, forms kids love, educational games and toys and printable fun stuff. You are welcome to them as my thank you for stopping in.)

My plan is to create a place where we can talk about catching up on...

> Educational Setbacks > Emotional and Social Setbacks > issues you would like to talk about. And we can do this togetgher. That's why I am speaking, (or typing) in a team-work tone and friend's voice. Let's see how this works.

I am nearly finished with my first of a series of special assessment for children. Not long, drawn out tests, but quick assessments for you to do at home with your child. They are specifically designed to determine where your child stands and if they have learned all that their age group or grade level has set in expectations.  When completed, this assessments will let you know about what grade level your child is in for:

I am beginning with spelling because it is probably the most simple,That way, you can become familiar with the assessment, see the ease and accuracy and feel comfortable moving on to others that you would like to use.  It will help you know what subjects to work on and what can wait until a bit later.

In the meantime, I am writing a series of articles that will begin the process of catching up and excelling in your child's education.  I have basics and learned tricks and tips, and mostly, fun and entertaining activities for your child.    I hope you enjoy this blog, be patient while I work on all of it, and mostly, ask questions and give others your own tips and trick.  So feel free to comment, (And hope I can figure out all the logistics), When you write, I will get back to you after the school day is over and all day for the most part on weekends.Deal?
